What happens to the platform after the funding runs out?

The ConfIDent project ends in December 2022. TIB has committed itself to maintain the platform for at least 3 years after the of the project. The ConfIDent team already has handed in a proposal for a follow up project to continue the development of the service for another 3 years.

Why not use the GND (Gemeinsame Normdatei) instead of ConfIDent?

The GND already has an impressive collection of conference and event related metadata which is constantly growing (https://lobid.org/gnd/search?q=*&filter=%2B%28type%3AConferenceOrEvent%29). So why is there a need for a new project that "redoes" a lot of what is already accomplished with the GND? There are several reasons for why the GND and ConfIDent are not the same and serve different needs:

  • ConfIDent purely focuses on academic events and series. Conferences and events in GND also contain a lot of cultural events like festivals or art exibitions (e.g. https://lobid.org/gnd/16092362-1)
  • The GND metadata schema already contains a lot of valuable information but is still fairly limited and can't be adjusted as flexible as we can adjust the ConfIDent metadata schema. We for example want to make the proceedings
  • ConfIDent wants to also include smaller academic events like workshops which not necessarily produce an output like a proceedings. GND entries are usually only created when a new ressource is catalogued by a librarian and for example a conference is referenced in a proceedings.
  • ConfIDent wants to enable any interested user to enter events and event series themselves. It is supposed to be a community driven and crowd sourced endeavour.
  • ConfIDent is committed to provide a platform that enables the user to browse events and to find the most relevant ones.
  • In the future, ConfIDent will enable automated data imports from trusted souces. GND will be one of those.

Although ConfIDent and GND have different purposes there is value in creating a connection between the too. In the future users of the GND data will find links to the DOI of the representation in ConfIDent. Here is a first showcase: The DOI 10.25798/6g5z-xw83 is marked in the MARC XML representation of the GND metadata in field 024a. Conversely the ConfIDent metadata will contain GND IDs.

Metadata related questions

Which metadata fields are going to be implemented?

To get an overview about the metadata fields that we plan on implementing you can check out the ConfIDent Metadata Schema. There you will find detailed desciptions of the planned metadata fields for events and event series. The Metadata Schema represents the blue print for the continuos development of the ConfIDent platform. As the platform it will be contiuosly improved and extended. We track the conception of new fields in github. Your feedback is very welcomed. Feel free to make new suggestions for fields.

How are events and event series classified in terms of their academic fields?

Events and event series must be classified with terms that researchers are familiar with and with which they can identify themselves and their scientific community. The smaller and more specialised a field is, the less likely it is that these terms will be found in a general classification system. However, in order to organise large amounts of scientific resources, such classification systems with standardised vocabularies are necessary. The use of standardised vocabularies also enables interoperability, i.e. integration with metadata from other information sources. ConfIDent therefore uses a hybrid approach: a group of curators - usually members of the scientific communities - can enter new keywords that may or may not match terms of a classification system. These are then matched by librarians to the terms of different classification systems. We use the OECD's Fields of Science (FOS) classification for this. The use of other vocabularies is being investigated.

The visualisation of academic fields and the possibility to browse by field will be improved upon in the future. Currently we offer a list of all used terms. But with this query you can for example already see all terms and thus events mapped to the OECD FOS classification "Computer And Information Sciences".

Will ConfIDent make use of PIDs?

Yes! Actually we already assign DOIs to some of our events and event series e.g. https://doi.org/10.25798/6g5z-xw83 or https://doi.org/10.25798/vj0d-nj28. As you can see, ConfIDent provides landingpages for those DOIs. In the future you will be able to find all the metadata related to the DOI and more on the respective ConfIDent landingpage. We were able to reuse the DataCite schema mostly without "bending" it too much. We gave an explanation how we are using the schema in this blog article. The article is a bit outdated since we changed some of our interpretation of the DataCite Schema. A How-to article detailing our current usage of the schema including the mapping to the ConfIDent schema will be published soon.

How can I reuse ConfIDent's metadata?

Semantic Media Wiki comes with the option to construct customized "ask-queries" (see SMW's documentation). You can make use of this function by navigating to either the Event Series page or the Events page and clicking "Show All Events/ Event Series".

You will then find a table produced by the default query. You can coustomize the query by clicking on the pen.

The page will extend to the top (scroll up) where you can set conditions for your query and adjust the output.

You can download the output of your query by clicking on one of the different dataformats available.

Platform related questions

When will users be able to register and enter events and event series themselves?

As soon as we have implemented a technical solution to accepted and reject edits. Experience has shown that platforms without any moderation tend to be flooded by questionable conferences. Their strategy is to advertise their conference as much as possible. As a technical solution we will probably use this mediawiki extension: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Approved_Revs
