"DIASPORAS OF THE NEW WORLD "

1st INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF YOUNG CARIBBEAN RESEARCHERS

The Center of Interdisciplinary Research in Languages, Arts and Humanities (CRILLASH) of the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, welcomes proposals for papers for the 1st International Symposium of Young Caribbean Researchers to be held January 21-22, 2009 on the campus of Schoelcher in Martinique, French West Indies. The conference is a biennual event for the fostering of innovative research among academics, artists and writers who either belong to the Caribbean Diaspora or have dedicated an important part of their studies to the "Sixth Continent".

An interdisciplinary perspective urges us to look into the following issues : how can a Caribbean nation be imagined beyond geographical, linguistic and political boundaries? How have diasporas contributed to the formation and evolution of Caribbean societies, and to the gradual transformation of the host countries in which Caribbean migrants have settled?

Topics might include but are not limited to :

•Literary representations of Caribbean diasporic communities

•travel writing

•migration studies

•economic impact of migrations on American and Caribbean societies

•anthropology and sociology

Please include the title and brief description of the presentation (no more than 300 words), names and affiliations of the presenters, and contact information. The deadline for submission is August, 1st. The committee will notify selected participants by September 1st.

Proposals and questions should be addressed to : Pr. Lionel DAVIDAS (lionel.davidas@martinique.univ-ag.fr) and to Dr. Frédéric Lefrançois (frederic-lefrancois@wanadoo.fr /flefranc@martinique.univ-ag.fr).
