The 3rd International Conference "Smart Materials, Structures and Systems" will be held in Acireale (Catania District), Sicily, Italy, on June 8 to 13, 2008. The conference that follows the ones previously held in Florence, Italy is part of the recognized CIMTEC series of international meetings which have been established as from the end of sixties.

Intensive research carried out worldwide in the past several years for creating higher forms of materials, structures and systems by providing them with life functions, resulted in a relatively high level of technology readiness with several applications now emerging, demonstrating that smart materials technologies have matured well beyond the conceptual stage. Widespread use of methods and tools enabling to manage matter down to the atomic scale, the development of novel algorithms and theories coupled with the exponentially increasing power for computation and multiscale simulation of processes, materials, structures and whole systems, are important factors which fuel the rate of advancement of the field. This also increasingly benefits by the merging of materials science and engineering with biological information coming from a deeper insight into the highly effective solutions created by nature along million years evolution.

The several Symposia featured by CIMTEC 2008 - 3rd International Conference "Smart Materials, Structures and Systems" will involve a multidisciplinary contribution of scientists and experts from Academia and Industry active in a variety of disciplines worldwide, to cover outstanding areas of the subject from simple adaptive materials to complex intelligent integrated systems, thus providing an excellent opportunity to foster progress in the field.

Before submitting an abstract, prospective authors are recommended to download the whole Call for Papers in order to select the most appropriate location for their contributions.
